Curved section of a Heavy Metal bench (top not pictured) that went out to NY last Christmas. . . This one is cast bronze with 22ct rose gold on top, polished to a mirror finish. The gold has to be reasonably thick to take the polishing. This was number two from an edition of 5. I’ve been testing out a new type of water gilding today, in preparation of application on a new sculpture. When ever I need to make sample, I cast a small vintage Coke bottle and apply it to that. This is a chair I designed and produced a few years ago. It’s made using a double shell mould system in one single piece, and has no joins or weak points. Made of carbon fibre and Nomex honey comb, it weighs less than 10kg but can support a significant load (150kg+). The chair was designed with the principals of chaos theory in mind. A double arm pendulum was swung several hundred times, with the resulting lines being averaged out and overlaid onto Phi curves (second image). This resulted in the chair being usable in two seating positions. I currently have a prototype of this chair available in Ti vapour with a black inside. There is also a limited edition (and larger sized) bronze cast available from @ursvonungergallerygstaad

WIP of a painting I’m working on in between several sculptures. Lots of gnarly textures which is fairly tedious work, I think this will be the last gold piece in the foreseeable future.

A fragmented bronze vessel I made last year. This was made by sticking all the polystyrene packaging I kept receiving in the studio together. Then a cavity was made using a natural orange turpine solution from citric rinds. Into this cavity I poured a blue casting wax which, once solidified, was revealed using more orange turpine. The resulting sludge could be disposed off much easier than the air filled polystyrene. Finally, the wax form was surrounded in a large steel cylinder, into which casting investment was poured. The cylinder is then lifted into a burnout oven and cooked at 710 degrees C for about two days. Once the wax has been fully burned out the large flask is placed onto a vacuum chamber and molten bronze is poured into the top. The action of the vacuum allows the bronze to be drawn into the super fine details shown in the picture. Something not possible with normal ceramic shell methods (essentially it was made like a giant piece of jewellery). Just an experiment, but one that turned out quite interesting!
One of my Abstraction series tables that was sold last year. Unfortunately before I could mould and cast it, so this one is truly a one-off. . These pieces are part of my continued exploration into kinetic forms; otherworldly movement and growth frozen in stasis. They are essentially emotions as expressed in organic form. . I create them using a molten bio-organic resin, heated to over 150 degrees C. Once the form is in alignment I then refine it by hand carving; both adding and removing material as necessary. Even after years of practice, this method has an incredibly high failure rate. . In order to cool the molten material I use a combination of liquid nitrogen and almost-freezing water. Unfortunately even with protection burns are a daily part of life. The forms are eventually cast in bronze and aluminium using the lost wax process and the original material is re-melted and recycled.
A functional sculpture I made a couple of years back for an exhibition in London. The nearly 4m long bench is currently on display in Gstaad. The sweeping curve is made from 90 individual laminated oak slices, held in position for several days by vacuum whilst they cured. After many hours of shaping and refining the wood is coated in several kg of pure silver and placed in special electroforming tanks. The copper thickness builds up to over 2mm, which is 200 times thicker than usual metal plating. The oak top is weathered naturally outdoors before drying in the studio for over a year. This bench has now been made into a smaller lost wax bronze/upholstered edition.
